Guidance for the Installation of Wet Pour Rubber Crumb

Guidance for the Installation of Wet Pour Rubber Crumb

Wet Pour Rubber Crumb, combined with our PU Binder, creates a seamless, durable, and slip-resistant surface ideal for playgrounds, sports areas, and outdoor pathways. It provides both safety and aesthetic appeal. For guidance on the correct surface depth to meet Fall Height regulations or other safety standards, please contact our experts. We are here to help ensure your installation complies with all necessary safety requirements.

Preparing the Surface

Before you begin installing Wet Pour Rubber Crumb, it is essential to ensure the correct surface preparation. Wet Pour Rubber Crumb can be laid on existing solid surfaces such as bitumen or concrete, provided the surface has adequate drainage. It is crucial that water does not pool beneath the rubber surface, as this could lead to issues with the installation’s durability.

Important

Do not lay Wet Pour Rubber Crumb directly on unprepared surfaces like soil or grass. A solid subbase is essential for durability. Start with a 100 mm layer of compacted aggregate (e.g., crusher dust), followed by a geotextile membrane to prevent weed growth and provide stability. Additionally, install firm perimeter edging using treated timber or other permanent materials to contain the rubber surface and maintain its integrity over time. This ensures a long-lasting, secure installation.

Weather Considerations

Proper weather conditions are crucial for the success of your Wet Pour Rubber Crumb installation. Avoid laying the surface in cold or damp conditions, as the minimum installation temperature is 5°C. Our PU Binders are moisture-activated, and exposure to rain or dampness can cause premature curing, leading to issues like uneven surfaces or difficulty spreading the material. For best results, ensure there is no rain forecast for at least 48 hours after installation begins. This helps guarantee a smooth and durable finish.

Mixing the Rubber Crumb and Binder

For a smooth and durable finish, the Rubber Crumb and Binder mixture must be carefully prepared. The typical mixing ratio is 4 kilograms of Binder per 25 kilograms of Rubber Crumb for the top layer. To ensure an even blend, use a forced action pan or paddle mixer, which are available for hire. Mix the ingredients for 4-6 minutes per batch—mixing too briefly can extend the curing process, while overmixing can make the material difficult to work with. Once mixed, immediately transfer the material to a wheelbarrow and transport it to the installation site. It is essential to lay the mixture promptly to prevent premature setting. Additionally, installation conditions are critical: avoid laying the surface in cold or damp weather, and ensure the temperature is at least 5°C. Exposure to moisture can cause the binder to react too quickly, resulting in an uneven surface or difficulty spreading the material.

Installing the Wet Pour Rubber Crumb

To apply Wet Pour Rubber Crumb, begin by troweling the mixture evenly over the prepared surface to a minimum depth of 15 mm. Use a depth block and straight edge to maintain consistent thickness, and then lightly roll the surface to achieve a smooth, level finish. The rubber crumb mixture will be highly adhesive at this stage, so it’s recommended to use a lubricant such as a soapy water solution, trowel lubricant, or even diesel fuel to prevent it from sticking to your tools. When working near the edges, apply a layer of binder to the perimeter boards to ensure strong adhesion between the Wet Pour Rubber Crumb and the edges. This will help secure the finished surface and prevent it from shifting over time. Maintaining smooth and even application throughout the process is essential for a durable and professional result.

Final Touches and Curing

Once the surface is laid, it’s important to clean your tools thoroughly using white spirits to remove any remaining binder. Allow the surface to set properly by refraining from walking on it for at least 24 hours, although it’s recommended to wait 72 hours before using the area for regular activity. By following these installation guidelines, you can ensure a high-quality Wet Pour Rubber Crumb surface that is durable, safe, and visually appealing.
