Silent Hill
Christophe Gans’ film recounts the events of the very first installment of the cult series, but does so with some liberties. Simply because it is impossible to transfer the plot of Silent Hill to the screen verbatim. Or else it would turn out to be an obscure arthouse film that even A24 studio probably wouldn’t take on.
That’s why there’s a whole cult here, not just a crazy mother who burned her own child. The mother in the film, by the way, didn’t burn her daughter, but she was still involved. There is also Pyramid Head, who is actually part of James Sunderland’s storyline from the second game. And instead of Harry Mason, there is Rose Da Silva, who travels with her daughter to a foggy town.
There are many differences, but they are all logical. The same change of the main character was necessary in order to carry through the entire film the beautiful leitmotif “In the eyes of a child, the mother is God.” Moreover, the changes still fit into the canon. Gunn treated it with surprising care, despite allowing himself many assumptions.

But most importantly, the film turned out to be excellent. It is skillfully shot (the moving sets built by the authors alone are worth mentioning), the monsters in it are truly terrifying thanks to professional choreography, and the plot is full of subtle but important details.
The first film was followed by a second, but we’ll forget about that one: it was awful in every way. But there is good news: Christophe Gans is shooting a new installment, and it’s worth waiting for.
Gran Turismo
Making a film adaptation of a game that has no plot is no easy task. That’s why the creators of Gran Turismo took a creative approach to solving the problem: they released a film about the greatness of the original video game series and its impact on the real world. Fortunately, they didn’t have to make anything up, because they had the true story of English racing driver Yann Mardenborough, a man who entered the world of professional driving thanks to his passion for Gran Turismo.
A lot was changed for the film adaptation. For example, they placed the movie version of Yann in the present day: instead of 2010 and PlayStation 3, it’s 2023 and the fifth PlayStation. This decision is understandable, as Sony needs to promote its current console, and the time period doesn’t play a big role in the story.
Super Mario Bros.
After the unsuccessful 1993 live-action adaptation, Nintendo was reluctant to sell the rights to its characters to Hollywood companies. Only experienced producer Chris Meledandri from Illumination, responsible for the success of Despicable Me, Minions, and The Secret Life of Pets, was able to convince the Japanese corporation to release an animated film based on the franchise.
At first, the project raised legitimate concerns: Chris Pratt was inexplicably cast as the voice of Mario, the script was written by the author of the second Minions movie, and the director of the feature-length animated film Teen Titans Go! was appointed to direct. However, the result was impressive: Super Mario Bros. managed to gross over $1.3 billion on a budget of $100 million. After watching it, you understand the reasons for the popularity of this new adaptation.
